Creativity in worship

What is worship? In a church context it is easy to slip into thinking that worship is singing songs. However, the truth is that it is so much more than that. In his excellent post on the subject, John Piper defines true worship as valuing or treasuring God above all things. (Do visit his website and have a read of the full article - What is worship?) He goes on to say that 'worship was designed to put the supreme worth of God on display. In fact, the English word “worship” comes from worth ship. That is, worship is showing, displaying the worth of God.'

Recently one of our church family emailed to share a poem he had written during a Sunday morning service. I found it really exciting that he had been inspired to be creative during this time. We worship a creative God, and so it should not be a big surprise that when we engage in worship, creativity flows. The poem is shared below - an expression of the way God loves us and makes life worth living even though our personal circumstances may be challenging.

How do you express the worth of God in your life? There are so many different ways to do so - from the creative arts to acts of love. As Piper observes Hebrews 13:15–16 says, “Through him, then,” — through Christ — “let us continually offer up a sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of lips that acknowledge his name. Do not neglect to do good and to share what you have, for such sacrifices are pleasing to God.”

Everyday

by Craig Malcolm

Everyday, you love me
Everyday, you hold me
Everyday, you make me whole

Loneliness surrounds me
Abandoned in this world

Hardship, Illness, Discord
Daily eats away my core

The world appears so difficult
So lacking future, hope

Yet,
Everyday, you love me
Everyday, you hold me
Everyday, you make me whole

And yet I look within me
From where my strength would rise

To see through situations
A hope that will survive

As,
Everyday, you love me
Everyday, you hold me
Everyday, you make me whole

A hope that is eternal
While all around will fade

Loneliness is just fleeting
Your presence the reality of faith

And faith is what will strengthen
A trust that shall not fail

A future becomes certain
Unaffected by what I see

And I know that:
Everyday, you love me
Everyday, you hold me

Everyday, you make me whole
